Women of the Ages: Jidai Matsuri (by mboogiedown)
“The festival was first held in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100 year anniversary of Kyoto becoming the Imperial capital, and to raise Kyoto’s morale after the loss of the capital and Imperial Court to Tokyo in 1868. The 2,000 participants in the procession wear period costumes representing styles from throughout Kyoto’s history, beginning with the modernized soldiers of the Meiji era, corresponding with the end of the Kyoto capital in 1868, back to the founding of the capital with characters from the Heian period.
The costumes, authentic even in their traditional production, are valued at over $25 million.”
